Philip L. Wright was born July 9, 1914 in Nashua, New Hampshire, to Avis and Clarence Wright. He obtained a bachelor’s and a master’s of science in zoology at the University of New Hampshire and, after completing a Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin, began teaching at the University of Montana in 1939. George Ellery Hale was an astrophysicist. He was the organizer and director of the Mount Wilson Observatory of the Carnegie Institute of Washington, 1904-1923, and was honorary director until his death in 1938.
